How Do I Choose A Laptop For Music Production?
Your computer is the center of your music creation, so you need to make sure you have the right one.
I’m going to take you through the computer requirements for music production, including the minimum specs, you should be looking at, and I’m going to help you understand what each part of the computer DOES when it comes to music production.
So, why is it so important to get the right computer specs? simply, it’s going to speed up your workflow, make your life a lot easier, and even help prevent you from losing unsaved work – like if a project freezes as you’re working on it.
When running music production software on low spec computers you’ll find that when RECORDING you’ll need a higher buffer size to prevent your DAW from crashing, which is going to create a load of recording lag – not ideal.
When running sample libraries or plugins your DAW will keep crashing and you’ll find yourself having to either limit the number of plugins or instruments you’re using OR bouncing tracks down to audio as you’re creating your music.
Obviously, that’s not ideal, particularly if you need to make good edits.
Mac Or Windows? Is Mac better than Windows or vice versa?
TRADITIONALLY, Mac was the preferred choice of professional music creators.
That’s changed A LOT in recent years though – partly from Mac becoming more consumer-focused and partly from Windows, and particularly companies like Steinberg, really upping their game on the Windows side of things.
The general consensus is that Windows and Laptops are cheaper and more customizable. That said, they’re also rumored to be a lot less reliable and to not stay as fresh or fast for as long as Macs.
On the other hand, Macs are generally said to “just work”, requiring a lot less fuss to get up and running, and tend to be more reliable in the long run.
But They’re damn expensive though!
For the same cost as an entry-level Mac, you could probably get an almost top-spec laptop too. John Powell uses Logic, but Junkie XL uses Cubase – and there are examples of famous composers and producers for pretty much every single DAW that’s out there.
Loosely speaking, more cores is better than faster clock speeds as you can essentially spread the workload of your system.
That’s something you should learn to do in your Audio Workstation as well – most of the software companies have walkthroughs on how best to optimize your DAW for splitting across cores.
Technology improves very rapidly and a lot of the advice out there at the moment is to have an intel i5 processor at the minimum, and the i7 to be optimum.
Some people say that 4GB is enough for music production, I would disagree and say that 8GB is your ABSOLUTE minimum, 16GB would be much preferred, even in a fairly basic setup.
Particularly if you’re working with a lot of sample libraries where the samples are essentially stored in the RAM as you’re working on projects.
In terms of that bottom layer, the main storage of your system, you have a few choices: hard discs, solid-state, M.2.
A Hard disc drive has a little spinning disc inside which has data written and read from it, whereas a solid-state drive has no moving parts, and the data is basically stored on a chip – much like a USD thumb or pen drive.
As compared to Harddisk, SSD is way faster than HDD and when it comes to M.2 they are fast and directly mont on the motherboard.
You don’t really need a massive drive INSIDE your system – in fact, it’s actually a lot better to keep things like sample libraries and audio files on secondary drives.
Make sure you have a decent capacity so that you don’t run out of space.
The graphics and audio cards don’t really matter as you’ll be using, or at least you SHOULD be used, an external audio interface. Unless of course, you plan on using the machine for gaming too, in which case you’ll want to look into the graphics card options.
It is very important having an 11 inch 13-inch laptop because you’re not going to always have an external screen or external keyboard and mouse and have an external setup.
That is going to give you everything so that you can be portable or if you wanna have everything set up that a laptop screen size is still big enough for you to do what you need to do.
There are many elite class competitors when it comes to laptops capable of music production at its finest, based on display size and performance necessary. But when push comes to shove, Ans Asus Rog Strix Scar III comes out as the top dog as the best laptop with highest capabilities of music production handling.
Music production facilitates heavy resource-consuming software and high-end picture and audio quality. These requirements narrow down the list of choices when it comes to laptop systems. Some of the important factors include Screen resolution and size, Performance, and a certain amount of portability along with aesthetics that inspire the artist in the art of music production.
When it comes to the Macintosh platform, the M1 chip powered Apple MacBook Pro M1 13 is thy choice when it comes to music production-related works. Even though it may seem a little lite when it comes to specs on paper, but the benchmarks truly represent its power thanks to Apple’s new M1 chip. Combining the performance with the true-tone retina display, it’s a no-brainer.
Preparing your system with the focus on music production is fairly straightforward, with the main focus on having zero unnecessary apps and processes running in the background so that resources are always available when needed. When it comes to Lenovo laptops, upgrades to the hardware along with disabling stock apps are necessary. Make sure to check the Dolby digital sound settings that come in many Lenovo laptops for optimizing sound quality.
Music Production depends on heavy software and dedicated drivers with absolute minimal lags in vocal inputs, hence it is a necessity to have a high-end laptop that can take up all the simultaneous running drivers and software. It should not be surprising to know that many bleeding-edge gaming laptops are a perfect fit when it comes to the task of music production.
When we talk about laptops in music production we need to focus on the specification that are required in it.
The latest and greatest is required in terms of processing and Graphics power as the laptops would always be under heavy load of complex softwares.
An optimal system should have atleast 24gb of ram, a high end latest generation of CPU along with a premium graphics card to do the job.
Before we start naming the laptops, it should be noted that the laptops used for producing music are different compared to the laptops used in performance of a dj concert. Some of the popular laptops used by dj’s are:
Apple MacBook Retina Display.
Microsoft Surface Pro.
Dell XPS 13 .
Lenovo Yoga Book.
Apple MacBook Air.
When it comes to ram , the software that a music producers will use required at least 8gb of ram but we prefer to get 16gb ram or upgrade it
